Split – Dubrovnik
I leave the institute during early morning on Saturday, to catch the bus to Dubrovnik. The journey is quite long (a bit more than four hours), but the scenery is amazing. The best view is on the right side of the bus: the road follows the coast, with some incredible views of the sea from the top..
Lascio l'istituto il sabato mattina presto, per prendere il bus per Dubrovnik. Il viaggio è lungo (poco più di quattro ore), ma il paesaggio è straordinario. La vista migliore la si ha dal lato destro del pullman: la strada segue quasi interamente la costa, con alcune incredibili vedute sul mare dall'alto..

The landscape changes at ~1h from Dubrovnik, when there is a border crossing Croatia-Bosnia and then back to Croatia. The road turns inland, crossing forests and valleys, but it returns on the coast when approaching Dubrovnik. A spectacular bridge marks the enter into the city.
Il paesaggio cambia a circa 1h da Dubrovnik, quando si attraversa la frontiera Croazia-Bosnia per poi ritornare in Croazia. La strada vira verso l'interno, attraversando boschi e vallate, per poi ritornare sulla costa all'arrivo a Dubrovnik. Il passaggio su uno spettacolare ponte segna l'ingresso in città.

The main part of the city is Stari Grad, the old city, surrounded by walls as in Split, although here they are more impressive: in some points they are like 20-25 meters high! The whole complex of the walls and the old city are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I spend a few hours exploring the old city inside the walls, walking without a precise itinerary. But actually it's easy, since the plant of the city is more regular: there is one main road and then several parallel alleys which depart from it. If you are a fun of the HBO series Game of Thrones, you will definitely love Dubrovnik, since you will recognize a lot of spots where some scenes have been filmed.
La zona principale della città è Stari Grad, ovvero la città vecchia, circondata come a Split da delle mura, che però qui sono decisamente più impressionanti: in alcuni punti raggiungono anche i 20-25 metri di altezza! L'intero complesso delle mura e della città vecchia è un patrimonio UNESCO.
Trascorro alcune ore esplorando la città dentro le mura, camminando senza seguire un percorso preciso. Qui è in realtà più facile orientarsi, infatti la pianta della città è più regolare: c'è un corso principale e diversi vicoli che si diramano da essa. Se siete fan della serie tv Game of Thrones, amerete sicuramente Dubrovnik, in quanto camminando si riconoscono facilmente diversi luoghi in cui sono state girate alcune scene.

Another thing I notice is the presence of a lot of stray cats. They are everywhere!
After a while, I quit the walls and I take the walk uphill to the Lovrijenac Fortress, from where one can enjoy a view of the whole old city.
Un'altra cosa che noto è la presenza di tantissimi gatti randagi. Sono praticamente ovunque!
Dopo un po', esco dalle mura e intraprendo la (breve) scalata verso la Lovrijenac Fortress, da dove si può ammirare una vista su tutta la città vecchia.

It's almost sunset when I get back to the old city to search for food. Dubrovnik is quite expensive compared to the rest of Croatia, but I am able to find a cool (and cheap) seafood place called Barba in one of the small alleys, where I eat a bizzarre Octopus Burger containing fried octopus (!). The place is weird: there are everywhere some forks painted with flags of different world countries and other stuff.
Il sole sta ormai calando quando torno all'interno della città vecchia in cerca di cibo. Dubrovnik è decisamente cara rispetto al resto della Croazia, ma trovo un locale interessante (ed economico) chiamato Barba in uno dei tanti vicoli, dove mangio un bizzarro Octopus Burger contenente del polipo fritto (!). Il posto è curioso: dappertutto dentro al locale ci sono delle forchette con dipinte le bandiere di tutte le Nazioni e altro.
I then make my way to the hostel where I spend a few hours in the common room, watching the Champions League final with Ahmed, a fun guy from Egypt, and the guy at the reception. Together we laugh about the funny Croatian speaker, which from time to time seems to forget he has to comment the match..
Ritorno quindi in ostello, dove trascorro un paio d'ore nella common room, guardando la finale di Champions League con Ahmed, simpatico ragazzo egiziano, e il ragazzo alla reception. Insieme ridiamo del telecronista croato, che di tanto in tanto sembra dimenticarsi di commentare il match..
